Done in a Day: Resource Area for Teaching
By Samantha Quist, Done in a Day Co-Chair
Volunteers from the Junior League of Palo Alto-Mid Peninsula descended upon the Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT) facility in Sunnyvale on July 17th to build affordable teaching supply kits for Bay Area educators. RAFT collects office and manufacturing supply donations from corporations and organizations and uses the materials to develop creative educational tools.
After a quick training, we set to work compiling kits that enable kids to make miniature hovercrafts out of CDs and balloons and enjoy hands-on experiences with concepts like friction, airflow, and gravity. By the end of our shift, we built 70 hovercraft kits so efficiently that we had time to start a new project creating paper supply kits.
Thanks to everyone who volunteered! And most of all, thanks to RAFT for making fun, hands-on educational supplies available and affordable to Bay Area educators and students.
